Leeching Modern Day

Today was the day I gave blood.

It was an interesting experience. First of all, I had no idea when we were going in. All I knew was that my mother was going to call me and then we would go.

So first thing in the morning, I got up and left for work. On the way, I grabbed a venti caramel machiatto. I was kind of tired and needed caffeine.

I got in just in time for an 8:30 a.m. meeting. At 9:00, we convened, and I went back to my desk. Just as I plopped my butt down, my cell phone rang. It was of course, my mother, with perfect timing.

So, I figured no problem, and headed over to the blood services place. Thank goodness my boss caught me before I went over there, because she told me to eat something or else Id be sorry right after.

So I hopped in my rav, and headed toward the healthiest place for breakfast I knowBurger King. I wasnt hungry at all though, so I ordered a sausage croissanwich and milk. I was able to only finish off half the croissanwich.

I got to the services place at about 9:30 a.m. and met up with my mom and grandma. We waited around for about half an hour, and then they escorted us one by one into tiny rooms for prep.

The guy was really nice and was willing to answer all my questions and put up with my childish snickering to the weird questions he gave me. Stuff like:

In the past twelve months has your partner engaged in butt sex with a same sex partner?

Okay, he didnt say butt sex, but I cant remember the specific phrase he used.

And In the past twelve months have you accepted money for sex?

I had to bite my tongue really hard on that one not to say, Does marriage count?

So once we got past the questions, he tested my blood for iron. I had a good reading and he even mentioned that I was well hydrated. Then he took my blood pressure. 116/64. Not bad.

Its always low. I checked with all the females in my family and this pretty much holds true across the board.

Then they led me to the comfy chair. I watched while they took blood from the others around me while they prepped. I couldnt believe they actually found a vein. She poked me once and almost got the vein, then had to wiggle it a bit to really get it in. Sounds worse than it was.

So I sat there, and sat there, and sat there. They said it normally takes 5-10 minutes. Me? No Im an overachiever. It took 20 freakin minutes to get my blood. Apparently my morning coffee and low pressure arent so good for taking blood.

Anyway, finally got the whole ordeal over and done with. Ive been lightheaded and tired all day.

Of course, Ill never mention this to mom. Halfway through, she said, Oh maybe we should just forget this. I didnt realize itd be such a big ordeal to get your guys blood. I didnt want to put you guys through this.

I felt so freakin bad. Of course, I replied that its no big deal. And it wasnt. Then she told me this probably wouldnt be the only blood transfusion shed need. Oh well. Its not like I didnt get anything out of it. I feel good to be able to do this for her. I love my mommy.
